The Safer Streets series is a series of demonstration projects or tactical urbanism projects to temporarily install road improvements. This allows the community to test out changes to street design. The series advocates for future road changes to improve safety for all modes of transportation whether a person is driving, biking, walking, or using public transit.

Belmont Ave. Youngstown Demonstration Details

In collaboration with Building a Better Belmont's Annual Bike Belmont!

Join us for a day of exploring a better Belmont with this Safe Streets Demonstration. Let's make a more walkable, bikeable, and green Belmont together!

The demonstration will be from Tod Lane to Gypsy Lane on Belmont and will include:

  • A lane reduction on both sides of Belmont between Tod and Gypsy
  • A temporary bike lane created using chalk

This temporary demonstration project will be available to the public from 11:30AM – 4PM on May 18th. The demonstration will be removed at 4PM on May 18th.

A survey will be available at the B&O station at the YSU GuinFit table after the Bike Belmont ride concludes. The survey will ask the public to tell us what they think of the temporary bike lane installation and lane reduction.  Please come share your feedback on the demonstration project so we know whether or not to advocate for a more permanent installation in the future.

What will this temporary demonstration project look like? Check out the mock ups below:

What are Safer Streets Demonstrations?

The Safer Streets Series is a type of pop-up demonstration project meant to bring our community together to test out creative approaches to safer street design. Projects typically test of proven safety measures recommended by the Federal Highway Administration which includes temporary changes such as creative crosswalk installations, bike lanes, and road diets. The Safer Streets Series also looks takes inspiration from Complete and Green Streets which aims to not only increase safety for multiple modes of transportation on a road (walking, biking, transit, cars, etc.) but also increase greenery on the road. During a demonstration this can mean bringing in trees in buckets and pots of other greenery to show the community what the area could look like with an increase in green infrastructure. Including more greenery can not only make the street more pedestrian friendly due to increase shaded sidewalks but can also help more adequately manage storm water. Overall, the Safe Streets Series provides us with an opportunity to imagine what roads in our community could look like, collect community feedback on the temporary road changes But also provide the neighborhood with a day of fun during the event with block party like pop-up with vendors, music, exercise classes, and more through collaboration with local businesses and other community stakeholders.
